Amelia is on her first great flight -- solo
across the Atlantic. Her tiny cockpit becomes filled with specters
of memory and she relives scenes from her life, scenes which challenge
her right to fame and her ability as a pilot. The flight succeeds
and Amelia's dream becomes possessed by Mary B, a young girl to whom
the flights of Amelia Earhart represent power, freedom, and the fulfillment
of the deepest yearnings of her young heart. The early history of
plane flight, the alcoholism of Amelia's father, the manufacture and
pressure of fame, and the neverending need for courage are the themes
of this play. This is a challenging play meant to be performed by
older actors, (high shcool at least) for all audiences.
