Good-for-nothing Rip goes hunting to avoid facing the fact that he
has signed away his daughter's inheritance in exchange for some ready
cash. In the mountains Rip encounters ancient Dutch spirits. He drinks
and dances with them, and falls asleep for twenty years. When he wakes,
the American Revolution has come and gone, and Rip's now-grown daughter
is being forced to marry a detestible scoundrel. But the old man returns
just in time to save the day and be welcomed back into his beloved
